New Fuel Price

Another season of higher fuel cost. The newly introduced RON 95 fuel is now priced at RM1.80 - five sen higher than the previous RM1.75. Meanwhile, RON 97 is upgraded as a premium product and has gone up to RM2.05 from RM1.80. The RON 92 is being phased out from the market.

The new prices were decided based on the current method of Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM).

With the price of 5 sen higher, the Government is still subsidising 33.81 sen per litre (of RON 95) which is equivalent to RM304mil monthly.

The newly introduced RON 95 also adheres to the EURO2M specification which can contribute to the reduction in pollution.

RON stands for Research Octane Number. A higher octane number means higher resistance to engine “knocking”. “Knocking” could possibly damage the engine over time.

Fuel Price Reduced Today

Petrol and diesel price drop by between eight sen and 22 sen a litre from today. The price of RON97 petrol will be reduced by 15 sen to RM2.55 a litre from RM2.70, while RON92 would be 22 sen less at RM2.40, from RM2.62 The retail price of diesel would drop by eight sen to RM2.50 a litre.



Is the quantum of decrease big enough to affect your standard of living? One thing for sure is that the price of foods will never be lowered whenever the fuel price is being reduced. Thus, by gaining one or two liters of fuel for every fill will not affect much your savings.

Another effect of Fuel Price Increase

An indirect effect of increases in fuel price is an increase in fatalities involving motorcyclists. In order to cushion the effect of the increases in fuel price, vehicle owners likely to switch their mode of transport to less fuel consuming transport i.e. motorcycles.



According to a report by Berita harian, 9 August 2008, the number of road accident fatalities involving motorcyclists increases within the past six months. According to the Director general of Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR), the increases might be due to the increases in motorcyles registrations due to the increase in fuel price.

The following are some statistics from the report.

January until June 2008 : 3,305 fatal accidents
January until June 2007: 3,015 fatal accidents

Increases of about 9.6% or 290 fatalities within the time period (211 fatalities involved motorcyclists and pillion riders).

Motorcycles registration increases by 30% in the past 6 months according to the director General of Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR), Datuk Suret Singh.

Fuel! Oh my Dearest Fuel!

It was just announced that the fuel price in Malaysia will increase starting tomorrow 5th June 2008. Petrol price will go up 78 sen per litre to RM2.70. Diesel price will go up RM1 to RM2.58 per litre.

With the increase in fuel price plus all of the increases in the food prices, our net take home salary is reducing further and put a lot of stress on regular commuters. Several Ways of Saving Fuel

Due to the rising oil price, an increasing number of motorists resort to several ways of utilizing every last mile from a tank of fuel. The most current method is called ‘hypermiling,' which is reported to be able to double gas mileage.

AirAsia is not Alone

Recently, AirAsia announced that starting from 21 April 2007, checked baggage handling fee will be imposed on each checked in baggage. The main reason for imposing the fee is due to rising fuel cost.

Starting 5 May 2008, five of the seven major US Airlines (Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and US Air) plan to charge most customers $25 each way to check a second bag. The difference with AirAsia is that they will not impose any charge for the first checked in bag.

Fuel Price Pinch

Starting April 21, 2008, travellers using a low-cost AirAsia carrier will have to give away some more money if they have baggage to check in. For online check-in, RM3 will be imposed per bag and RM5 per bag for airport check-in. Keep in mind that you have to pre-book your baggage in order to be eligible for the RM3. In the sense that you have to pay in advance RM3 if you think that you will check one baggage at the time or travel. In case that you did not check-in the baggage than there is another question whether you will be refunded the RM3. Also, if you have more than one baggage to be check-in then you have to pay RM5 for the second baggage. The charges are to defray the rising fuel cost. On top of that excess baggage fee for baggage exceeding 15 kg still applies.

One reason for the fee being imposed is to discourage travellers bringing too many baggage and with lighter load, fuel can be reduced and airline ticket fees can still be reduced. To avoid from paying the additional charges, travellers will pack all of their things in the carry-on bag and as a result, the waiting time to board an aircraft will be longer due to everybody is taking their time to put their bags on the overhead compartment. With the additional time will add to the everlasting flight delay experiencing by AirAsia. Also, passengers will have to endure the hassle of carrying larger and heavier Carry-on bags if they use AirAsia.

For low-cost carrier, that is their way (which I bag to differ) of covering the rising fuel cost.

Skyrocketing Fuel Price

Thank goodness that we are living in Malaysia where the government subsidized some portion of the fuel price. In Malaysia, the petrol price is fixed at Rm1.91 per liter. In Malaysia we don't feel the pinch of rising fuel cost. Whereas in the US, the fuel price is more than USD3.50 per gallon. Just for conversion, 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters. Using this conversion, for 1 US gallons, in Malaysia, the pump fuel price is aroung RM7.00 as compared to about RM12.00 in the U.S. The lower cost for Malaysian is because the government spend billions of ringgit annually to subsidized the price difference.

In the U.S., the fuel price varies depending on the fluctuation of the market price of fuel. Users have to pay the fuel price without any subsidy and they have to bear the skyrocketing price due to the rising in fuel cost.

With the increase in fuel cost, users will cut down on the trips or they have to use other alternatives such as public transport which is much cheaper.

Saving Fuels

In a move to save fuels due to rising fuel costs, truckers are voluntarily or forced to slow down their big-riggers. By reducing their speed, they will help their company saves on record high diesel prices. As of now, the current diesel price in the U.S. is USD4.00 per gallon.

The move to reduce speed will also reduce the accident rate nationwide.
