Bailey Bridge

IMG_2972

Bailey bridge is a pre-fabricated truss bridge which requires no special tools or heavy equipment for construction. Picture above shows one of the Bailey bridge being used frequently for newly constructed road in rural areas. The bridge is used to cross mostly canals in order to enable vehicles to pass through.

This picture was taken on the Independent Day of Malaysia (Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!!!). To the rural folks, they are truly being liberated now because they already have a very good road network accessible to their locality which is beyond their dream several years ago. Before, the only mean of transport is by boat through its long and winding river system. Using the river, travelling usually takes several days which is now accessible only within several hours using the newly constructed road network.

Using the Bailey bridge, which is of course a temporary bridge, the available allocation given to the authority can be used to build more roads to connect more rural communities. I believe, with the increase in the number of traffic in several years to come there will be a need to upgrade the Bailey bridge into a more permanent bridge.

For the rural folks, in order to cross a much wider river, ferry is being used. The ferry is capable of carrying heavy vehicles and several cars at any one time. Read HERE for more experiences crossing the Sadong River.
